About UMLUG
General info about UMLUG's mission and purpose.
What is a LUG?
A LUG, a Linux User Group, is just that, a group of people who use the
Linux operating system. As Linux is not a commercial product strictly
speaking, and as we're a rather unconventional lot for choosing to use
Linux rather than some other operating system, it's very beneficial to
have someone to turn to for questions. Since Linux is released under
the GNU General Public License,
it also tends to attract people who believe in Free Software and the
various things it represents, or who like to write their own software
or help others to write good software.
What is Linux anyway?
To quote from linux.org:
Linux is a free Unix-type operating
system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of
developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public
License, the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone.
What does UMLUG do?
We run and participate in a quite active mailing list, and we have meetings once a month, usually with a guest speaker to talk about an issue that is related in some way to Linux or Free Software or whatever interests most people. And we have pizza and soda.
